Silk Cities
Silk Cities is an independent hub, aiming to bridge the gap between local and global efforts, academia and practice, and local and diaspora experts, and bridges fragmented urban domains. Being inherently interdisciplinary, Silk Cities performs under the overarching and overlapping spheres of resilience and disaster management, urban development, communities’ cultural assets and social well-being. We introduce real-world, yet under-explored contextual and global issues, then take intellectual leadership to initiate frontier projects such as international conferences, bringing together dispersed knowledge and ideas, and setting new directions for research, policy, and practice. Silk Cities focus on knowledge exchange, research, raising awareness, and publication. Through intellectual capacity building and creating international visibility of those under-presented local researchers and working professionals, Silk Cities strives to inspire, empower, and make a positive impact. Through its organic growth, over individual researchers and practitioners directly participated in our international conferences, workshops, and other projects. The impact of Silk Cities projects spread globally through its reference books and open-access eBooks, free online lectures and Then and Now resources. By using the narrative of the urban Silk Roads, we tap into the notions of connectivity and exchange, and historical presence that is reflected in city characteristics and urban life, and complex global challenges. With an initial geographic focus on challenges countries in the Middle East and Central Asia face, the geographic coverage of Silk Cities reaches out further to other cities, regions and countries that are prone to similar issues and fosters international exchange. Living Cities Earth
We are action-researchers, pioneering integral urban development, acting as a vital mycelium network within the urban ecosystem. Much like the intricate underground mycelium that connects the roots of plants, enabling exchange of nutrients and information, LCE weaves together grassroots organisations, communities, and top-down city, bio-regional, business, finance, and governance structures. We ensure that the voices, needs, and innovations of citizens are not only heard but seamlessly integrated into larger systemic strategies. LCE’s role as this living network facilitates a bidirectional flow of knowledge and resources, mirroring the mycelium’s ability to transport vital resources to where they are most needed. In this way, we create thriving ecosystems where all parts—from small community groups to large governance bodies—contribute to and benefit of the collective well-being of the whole. Through this process, we catalyse the co-creation of solutions that are both innovative and regenerative. Grassroots organisations contribute creativity, resilience, and a deep understanding of local challenges, while city governance, businesses, and financial institutions provide the scale, resources, and strategic oversight necessary for transformative change. Together, they can cultivate environments where life flourishes, nurturing cities that are resilient, inclusive, and adaptable. As the world’s largest integral city development community, LCE unites leading practitioners from diverse fields to tackle global challenges through innovative, multidisciplinary approaches. Our team offer guidance, support and ultimately training that makes these skills available locally, because global challenges must be met with local action, where the decisions of those deeply invested in their communities create positive, impactful change. Our mission is audacious: inspire, empower, & interconnect 1 million local and global leaders of positive change, co-creating thriving cities.

Alloway Railway Tunnel
We want to transform an old, dilapidated tunnel in Alloway, Scotland, that has been defaced with graffiti into a safe, inspiring place, with a beautiful hand painted mural by one of the UK’s top muralists and visionaries. We are a Scottish charity with seven trustees from a variety of backgrounds, engineering, project management, banking and finance, social work, law, marketing and business. We all care about improving our community by enhancing this walk/cycle path. We want to engage with young people to help them learn new skills by giving them exciting opportunities to get involved with our project. Why does this project matter? It matters because Alloway is an idyllic village in South Ayrshire with worldwide recognition as the birthplace of Robert Burns. We are proud of this legacy and want to ensure residents and visitors have the best experience when exploring our village. Improving the tunnel through an amazing art installation will enhance that experience and help us tell the story not just about Robert Burns, but about the history of Ayrshire. The mural will have interactive elements so that visitors can learn about the history of Ayrshire. It will be a celebration of our heritage and provide a lasting legacy. People will love the new space and want to revisit time and time again. By improving our cycle path through the village, we hope to encourage more people to enjoy cycling and walking and experience all the wellbeing benefits this brings. We will be visiting schools and youth groups to involve children in art workshops. They will learn creative skills through an educational process. Their work will be used to help create this massive mural and will create a sense of ownership and pride. We will also be running creative workshops for adults who want to help paint the mural. We know it will be of interest to local art clubs, but we want it to be accessible to anyone who has an interest in helping to create the mural. It’s going to bring people

Considerate Urbanism
Considerate urbanism is about making urban environments, urban life, and urban experiences more considerate of people and our diversity, needs, behaviours, emotions, and our relationships with our planet and each other. A more considerate form of urbanism recognises cities are more than bricks and mortar, they are an experience, a philosophy, a mode of production and a lifestyle. It is considerate of the sensory, emotional, and psychological dimension of urban space and urban experience. It is mindful of the impact of change and the way we design has on ourselves and others. It is sympathetic to our urge to create and communicate meaning, identity and belonging through the built environment. It empathises with a wider spectrum of people and their needs and lived experiences. So, people can tangibly see and say that they and their needs have been seen, acknowledged, and accounted for in their experience and use of the city. It fosters kindness, empathy, affinity, and caring urban behaviours to help bind our social fabric together. It's urbanism that likes you - and is like you.
